Car Key Repair Service in Lincoln

Although these keys can be frustrating, they are pretty hardy keys and an unusual design. The key splits into two parts. The main part is the remote control. It has all the buttons and inside is a rechargeable battery. The idea for this key was sound enough.

The key was design to be rugged and so it’s a sealed up unit, it shouldn’t be opened. We imagine that the key could be submerged in a muddy puddle, retrieved and it still work.

This was perfect when they were new, but we all know the problem with rechargeable batteries! Eventually they give up charging. We’ve written all about what happens when the buttons stop working, which is a common fault. You may also suffer from windows that open without any reason

This article will look at the prices of a Freelander spare key and your options for a cheaper key.

Freelander Spare Key - Genuine or Copy?

You only have two options for your Freelander spare key. The first is to get a genuine key. These keys are good quality, even though you will read a lot about the problems with the keys. We normally see these keys with problems once they get to about 8-9 years old.  Compared to other makes of car, this is very good quality.

To buy a genuine key, cut and coded to your car, you need to spand at least £260, considerably more at the dealer.

For this you’ll get a genuine key and it will last for years. However we’re all on a budget and there is another option for you.

Copy Freelander spare key - Prices and Problems

For a start, these are much cheaper than the dealer key, less than half price. We sell these copy keys for £130, at our Car Key Man workshop in Lincoln

The copy keys work the same and look the same but there are differences that you should now about. Firstly, they are not as good as the genuine keys. The issue is the rechargeable battery.

In the genuine key, the battery is held tight in place with a plastic frame.

Even with this plastic frame, the legs on the battery break eventually, so we replace the battery.

However, the copy key that we sell does not have this plastic frame around it.

The battery is not supported, which means it is not protected against the shocks of beng dropped etc. That being said, we sell plenty of these keys, they work perfectly well and have not any many issues with them.

The other difference is that the keys are not sealed up. As far as we can tell this is not a major issue, as long as you’re not in the habit of dropping car keys in muddy puddles!

Are they as good as the dealer key?

We often get asked whether the copy keys are as good as the dealer keys? The copy key is a trade-off, you pay half the price, and you get a key that does the job. No, it isn’t as good as the £270 dealer key, but at £130, it is good value for money.  We normally keep these keys in stock and they require programming to your car
